It's an unsettled picture across the UK this weekend as storm Gertrude rattles across northern parts of the country.

The Met Office have issued multiple warnings for rainfall across Southern & Western parts of England, blizzard warnings for Scotland and a rare red warning for the Shetland and Orkney Isles for severe gales in excess of 100mph.

As we progress through the weekend it will remain very unsettled for Northern England and Scotland with severe gales and heavy frequent showers falling as a mixture of rain, sleet, snow and hail with the additional risk of thunder. It will remain mostly dry across central and southern parts but it will be cold and windy. Glancing ahead to Sunday sees Gertrude sliding away to the east but waiting in the wings is another weather system bringing further heavy rain and milder temperatures to start the new week.
